Class Piano II Skills and Topics

Students in Class Piano II (MUS 1132) will learn the following:

Repertoire

  • 4–6 pieces, not memorized, late elementary level

Musical Vocabulary

  • Scales
    • Tetrachord harmonic minor scales in all keys
    • Two-octave scales, hands separately in CDEFGAB major and harmonic minor
  • Arpeggios
    • Two-octave arpeggios, hands separately in CDEFGAB major and harmonic minor
  • Chords
    • Triads and inversions, blocked and broken, hands separately in CDEFGAB minor
    • Chromatic chord crawl: minor triads in root position, hands together
    • Diatonic chord crawls: ABCDEFG minor, hands together

Harmonization

  • Prepared examples in major and minor keys using primary chords (I, IV, and V) in closest position

Transposition

  • Prepared melodies in major and minor keys

Reading

  • Prepared score-reading examples involving two non-transposing lines
  • At-sight melodies, simple two-hand textures
