73 Two-Hand Harmonization
A two-hand harmonization is a practical and satisfying way to accompany a melody that is sung or played by another instrument. The foundation for two-hand accompaniments is the “keyboard style” texture. Keyboard style places the bass line alone in the left hand and three voices in the right hand, using closest position chords to maintain smooth voice leading.
After you’ve mastered keyboard style with blocked chords, you can animate any progression with various rhythms and arpeggiation styles to match the meter and mood of the piece. The examples below should be considered a starting place—feel free to create your own accompaniment styles!
