Class Piano I Skills and Topics

Students in Class Piano I (MUS 1131) will learn the following:

Repertoire

  • 4–6 pieces, not memorized, early to mid-elementary level

Technique

  • Posture
  • Hand position
  • Direct and legato pedal

Musical Vocabulary

  • Scales
    • Five-finger patterns in all major keys
    • Tetrachord scales in all major keys
    • Two-octave scales, hands separately in CDEFGAB major
  • Arpeggios
    • One-octave arpeggios, hands separately in CDEFGAB major
  • Chords
    • Triads and inversions, blocked and broken, hands separately in CDEFGAB major
    • Chromatic chord crawl: major triads in root position, hands together
    • Diatonic chord crawls: ABCDEFG major, hands together

Harmonization

  • Prepared examples in major keys using primary chords (I, IV, and V) in closest position

Transposition

  • Prepared melodies in major keys

Reading

  • At-sight melodies and simple two-hand textures
