50 Minor Five-Finger Patterns

Recall the Major Five-Finger Pattern, introduced in Unit 2. It includes the first five notes of the major scale: do re mi fa sol.

C Major Five-Finger Pattern

 

The Minor Five-Finger Pattern includes the first five notes of the minor scale: do re me fa sol. It’s nearly the same as the major five-finger pattern, with only one difference: the third note is lowered by a half step.

C Minor Five-Finger Pattern

The minor five-finger pattern contains both whole and half steps. Label the whole step(s) with a W and the half step(s) with an H in the blanks below the keyboard.

Using this pattern of whole and half steps, you can build minor five-finger patterns for all twelve keys:

Starting note + whole step + half step + whole step + whole step

You can also think of the major five-finger pattern first, then lower the third note by a half step to find the minor five-finger pattern.
