33 Two-Octave Major Scales

To play scales over more than one octave, simply repeat the same pattern of the first octave. Use finger 5 only for the highest note of the scale in the right hand and the lowest note of the scale for the left hand.

Scale Practice Techniques

  • Say the finger numbers aloud
  • Play in dotted rhythms
  • Hold finger 1 with a fermata, then zoom through the intervening notes to the next 1
  • Gradually increase speed with metronome
  • Descend first, then ascend
  • Blocking: Play finger 1 alone, then play the notes leading up to the next 1 as a block or chunk (see below). This highlights the alternating fingering pattern within each octave.
