5 Introduction to the Ovide Moralisé Discussion

Discussion

Create a detailed entry for your journal, responding to the following questions:

  1. Take a look at the page (or folio) from a glossed manuscript of Ovid included in your PressBook. How does it look different from the books you typically read from class and what kinds of conclusions do you draw about the active practice of reading in the Middle Ages?
  2. By now all (or most of you) have read Dante’s Comedy in GTX 2302. As you return to canti 1 & 2 of the Inferno, what kind of need does the narrator set up for Dante’s character? Why does St. Lucia visit Virgil, specifically? (Rather than another author?)
  3. The OM was composed in France around the same time as Dante composed the Comedy in neighboring Italy. While Dante was inspired by Virgil’s Aeneid, our author takes as point of departure Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Now that you’ve read Book1 of the Metamorphoses, how does Ovid’s lengthy poem strike you as different from his fellow Roman, Virgil?
