6 The Brain

Think back to your earliest memories of school. What types of information did you learn? How did you think about your experience of going to school?  What did you think about your life? Compare these memories to how you think now. What types of information are you learning in higher education? How do you think about your life and experience of going to college now? The way we think changes across the lifespan, and these changes are fueled by maturation of our brains. In this chapter we’ll examine notable changes to the brain in infancy and in later adulthood. We’ll also discuss how sleep changes from infancy to adolescence, and how sleep is important for overall health.
